How It Works

By taking this course, you have embarked on one of the most important tasks in becoming a public safety communications professional. This program is designed to provide you with the basic training you need to perform as a public safety communications professional, and this manual is designed to provide only the very basic training needed and should be followed up by on-the-job training as well as regular in-service training throughout your career.

Being a telecommunicator is more than a job; for many, it becomes a calling. Many of those who find this job did not grow up thinking they would be a telecommunicator, but after a period of time they find they have been called to serve. A telecommunicator is part of the public safety team. When an emergency occurs, someone will pick up a phone or a radio and call for assistance. The telecommunicator is often the first trained professional to respond to an emergency and why many people say they are the first, first responder—the cornerstone of public safety.
